The Breakthrough: A Symbol of Resilience and Inspiration

An Aluminum Sculpture by Yu-Chi Chien

The Breakthrough is an aluminum sculpture that embodies the teaching philosophy of Hillside Family Center, located at the main campus in Rochester, NY. Inspired by the image of wings gradually growing from weak to strong, this public art sculpture symbolizes the process of confronting and overcoming challenges and difficulties.

The Breakthrough serves as an interactive art installation that not only beautifies the entrance of Hillside but also provides children with exposure to art, inspiring their imagination and creativity. The sculpture represents the positive attitude that Hillside aims to instill in its students and staff when facing the ups and downs of life.

Created through a combination of digital fabrication and handcrafting techniques, the aluminum sculpture stands as a testament to the unique properties of this design. Its sleek and modern appearance adds a touch of elegance to the surroundings, while the choice of aluminum ensures durability and resistance to the outdoor elements.

One of the remarkable features of The Breakthrough is its interaction with sunlight. Throughout the day, the sculpture casts different shapes of shadows on the wall, creating a dynamic and ever-changing visual experience. In the winter, the sculpture even carries snow, further enhancing its appearance and adapting to the changing seasons.

The design process of The Breakthrough was not without its challenges. Given the particularity of the students at Hillside, the designer, Yu-Chi Chien, worked closely with the school staff to ensure the safety of the sculpture. The bottom of the elements was adjusted to be flat, preventing any potential accidents. Additionally, the choice of materials took into consideration factors such as climate, snow, drainage, and rust resistance.

The Breakthrough was the result of extensive research and collaboration. Yu-Chi Chien surveyed various possible sites for the public art installation and conducted interviews with the staff at Hillside Family Center. This research, combined with an understanding of the school's history, inspired the core concept of the sculpture.

In recognition of its exceptional design, The Breakthrough was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The sculpture's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.

The Breakthrough stands as a symbol of resilience, inspiration, and the power of art to uplift and transform. It serves as a reminder to the students and staff at Hillside Family Center to maintain a positive attitude in the face of challenges, just as the wings of the sculpture face the sunlight, leaving shadows behind.
